On Oct.4, Costa Rica will launch a new online system to replace the previous tax return submission system, according to the Finance Ministry. Called the Virtual Tax Administration (ATV), the new online platform can be accessed via the Finance Ministry's website. The new platform will replace any current software that taxpayers were required to install.
According to Fernando Rodriguez, finance vice minister, the ATV will make it possible for taxpayers to file their taxes in a more expeditious manner while giving the agency instant access to the latest reports. All that is needed to access the new system is a computer connected to the Internet.
For taxpayers who have previously registered with the Tax Administration, it will be possible to log onto the system using their existing identification numbers and passwords. Users will be required by ATV to register a cellphone with the system, as well as an email address. Such information will be used to provide taxpayers with information about system procedures. Users should be aware that the platform cannot be used with mobile devices.
In addition to making it easier and faster for taxpayers to submit their tax returns, the new system will also provide improved security compared to the software version. Users can rest assured that their confidential information will not be stolen or accessed by unauthorized individuals.
The older system will remain active on a temporary basis only for administrative purposes, such as payment of fines for administrative violations, tax payment form processing, and payment of property transfer taxes.
Taxpayers who lack a computer with an online connection will be able to use computers at Tax Administration branches located throughout all provinces in Costa Rica. Computers at public libraries and kiosks located at the National Technical University and the University of Costa Rica also may be used for accessing the system.
