Costa Rican police as well as officials from the Aguirre Municipality have been busy ensuring that the locals and tourists near Manuel Antonio are safe. A recent anti-crime sweep was planned in order to clean up the area following years of complaints regarding criminal activity in what has become the top travel destination in Costa Rica.
The sweep came about following complaints from tourists and businesses regarding the increasing presence of robberies, drug use, and unlicensed vendors. As part of a joint operation, more than one dozen markets that had been operating without a health permit or business license were shut down. Additionally, two women were arrested as part of the operation. Authorities also confiscated small amount of crack, cocaine, and marijuana.
Local police have also indicated plans to reinforce their presence in the area, particularly during the weekends, when tourist hotspots tend to be busier. The Tourist Police also have plans to step up cooperation with local community organizations. Ultimately, the goal is to assist the municipality in reinforcing order without affecting the tourists in any way and ensuring that the tourists are able to enjoy the park without feeling threatened.

Those numbers represent a 37 percent increase over the previous year. In addition, home burglaries have also increased by more than 8 percent.
